International Alternative Networks
Global alternative communication networks are expanding and growing. Its strength is based on cooperation via social movement organizing and media reform initiatives to change information and communication to the benefit of all. These networks differ in terms of their location, type and focus, but they are all joined by a non-commercial ethos and a resistance to imperialist power mechanisms. International alternative networks include non-profit groups, individuals, and local websites that support the idea of democratizing information and encouraging the reform of communication. They also create new communication infrastructures that support local connections, regional shifts and global ones in relation to social movements. They also develop a network of regional, local-local (especially south-south) and trans-national links that bypass imperial north-south dynamic.
In the early 1990s, a range of alternative media tasks began to pop up all over the world. They took advantage of newly available alternatives to corporate production media channels to promote their message of empowerment of consumers and empowerment of communities. Initially, they were local and then they merged and connected across national, and regional boundaries to provide a broader media option for everyone.
As opposed to the traditional communication infrastructure that is based on large capital investment the alternatives employ volunteers to assist in their work. In turn, they are able to offer lower costs and more flexible plans for customers. They can also implement infrastructure faster, which allows for a more rapid rollout of 5G technology as well as a larger expansion of coverage areas. This will help businesses compete more effectively on the market by ensuring their customers have access without delay to cutting-edge technology.
